a_e was an organising umbrella for events in Manchester. When I came back from a spell in Berlin it was painfully obvious that Manchester artsists tended to work in isolation and rarely saw/heard each others work. When I went to events I found it hard to talk/hear; audiences reverted to drinking practise. So I asked around, set a short series of free, low-volume events in a downstairs bar and used it as an excuse to call people up and ask them about their work. I encouraged new projects, experiments, collaborations and went out of may way to ensure that there was always something non-musical in the evening. This meant that whilst the mainstay was music/soundthere were also performances, videos, dance etc. Most weeks there was someone from out of town, often international guests and always a busy line-up and a slightly crazed mix of styles, approaches, aesthetics. (See list below) After two years I started to organise larger events, usualy in non-music venues and sometimes with funding support. These were bigger, brought in new audiences and made use of some great new spaces. |

About aLECTRO_eCOUSTIC and its future The
main idea was to encourage exchange - between artists and between their
audiences. Between the acts there was no interval music. The
particular focus was innovative contemporary music; electronic and acoustic,
often juxtaposed with performance work or more traditional music and
played at low volume. In the course of past two years and over 100
events, aLECTRO_eCOUSTIC has presented music, video, performance,
text-based work, unamplified acoustic music, electronic music, interactive
live sampling performances, a pub quiz, a group exhibition of Sound
art works in St. Philips Church (as part of the SHO#2 Chapel St. open
exhibition) and commisioned 6 new sound works (sonic exchange). Many many thanks to all the Artists who have
given so generously, here is an incomplete list;
